DEEP2: A Deep Extragalactic
Evolutionary Probe
The DEEP2 Redshift Survey is intended to characterize galaxies
and large-scale structure at z~1 for comparison to z~0, with
sampling comparable to surveys of the local universe.
A survey of ~ 60,000 galaxies in four 0.5° ´2° fields will be
conducted in 120 nights over 3 years using the new DEIMOS
spectrograph at the Keck Observatory.
DEIMOS will allow us to obtain spectra with resolution R~5000
(~65 km s-1 FWHM) for 100-150 galaxies at a time, allowing
detection of the O[II] 3727 doublet for galaxies with 0.7< z <1.4
Linewidths or rotation curves for 25-50% of sample
Complementary data from HST, XMM, SIRTF, GALEX, S-Z…
Spectroscopic observations will begin Spring 2002!
